NERD_tree now has a “nerdtree_plugin” directory. The NERD_tree-ack.vim plugin should be placed into the nerdtree_plugin directory, or you will get an error.

I ended up just recompiling vim and gvim following the instructions above and ported over the same instructions for gvim from vim.
